Re-paved pedestrian square and gas light re-introduced into Old Palace Yard

Old Palace Yard, London SW1

Location Westminster, London BROWSE
Office London BROWSE
Sectors Public & Institutional, Repair & Refurbishment
Dominated by a main traffic artery, by car parking for the House of Lords and by security fencing, Old Palace Yard was difficult to appreciate as a single space.

The Practice, appointed as architectural consultants, have developed proposals for re-paving the Square, in conjunction with Hyder, using a more regularised layout of York stone paving and replacing tarmac with setts. Car parking has been eliminated in front of the George V statue. Gas lights, to the original Charles Barry design, have been re-introduced at the perimeter.

The project is the first phase of Westminster's 'World Squares for All' to be implemented. Further phases of work adjoining the Palace of Westminster will include security barriers based on railing designs by Barry and improvements around the statue of Richard I.
