The Public Record Office Rolls Buildings after cleaning

Designed by Pennethorne and later Taylor, this Office was built between 1850 and 1896. Although structurally sound, general deterioration and some bomb damage called for substantial repairs to the external fabric.
Stonework was cleaned using low pressure abrasive washing to retain the crispness of the stonework face, but cleaning also revealed many defects formerly obscured by soot. Original Babbacombe, Kentish Rag and Portand stones were renewed, while French Jaumont stone was selected to replace Anson stone.
Roof repairs included re-covering one roof in salvaged st iron tiles. The Search Room lantern was re-created to its original design by Pennethorne; while provision of a new over-roof allows improved environmental conditions within the Search Room below.
