Providing facilities for the disabled has been an important feature in opening Somerset House to the public and specialist advice was taken on all aspects of accessibility throughout the site.
New granite sett paving to the Courtyard was selected to allow wheelchair access, but all doors into the building were approached by short flights of steps across dramatically deep lightwells.
An equally dramatic new ramped approach to these doors was designed in stainless steel, partly stone-clad, with minimal disruption to the flanking stone balustrading. Disabled visitors can now arrive at the same entrances as the ambulant.
