Donald Insall Associates has helped restore the celebrated interior of this well-known and much-loved Belfast public house. Owned by the National Trust (Northern Ireland), it was built in 1826, shortly after the opening of Ireland's second railway line, linking Belfast with Lisburn. The glorious wood-panelled interior, with its decorative tile work and private booths ('snugs') was installed in 1885 and the publican later commissioned E and J Byrne to design the façade.

By 2003, the Bar's popularity had taken its toll on the historic fabric, which was suffering from a high level of wear and tear. We prepared a conservation strategy, based on research and analysis; devised specifications for repairs, including historic tiles, glass, metalwork and joinery; oversaw trials by specialist conservators and prepared a programme of work for the repairs, which has been completed through our joint Client.
