A major restoration for Wolverhampton City Council has been carried out under the Practice’s direction to stabilise and restore the fabric of this Grade II* landmark building. Fire had ravaged the structure in 2003; and the building had been placed on English Heritage's Buildings at Risk Register.
Originally built as a town house for the wealthy Molineux family, the building later became a hotel and the centrepiece of the town's first public park.
The building has been made stable and weather-tight with a new roof. A late-19th century clock tower, which had been destroyed, has been rebuilt on the evidence of historic photographs. The original staircase has been reconstructed in new oak, incorporating surviving wainscot panels, handrails, newels and balusters. Rococo plaster enrichments and missing areas of oak panelling have been restored in the principal rooms.
Awards: Georgian Group Commendation (Restoration of a Georgian Building in an Urban Setting); Green Apple Award; LABC Built in Quality Award (West Midlands Region)
Client: Wolverhampton City Council
