Donald Insall Associates undertook a Feasibility Study for Sheffield City Council, to test if the Grade II* Butcher’s Works, one of the last remaining cutlery works in central Sheffield, could be found a new life. This complicated range of buildings had developed over some 200 years to create a labyrinth of stairs and spaces of varying form and character around an enclosed courtyard; and a full Condition Survey and Conservation Plan were prepared to guide future decisions about the buildings.
DIA was subsequently appointed by the new owner of the site as Conservation Architect to help implement the Conservation Plan policies; and this has resulted in a successful and sensitive conversion of the complex into residential apartments.
Client: Sheffield City Council/J F Finnegan
