Ranging from the Market Place, this merchant's house with extensive warehouses incorporates 14th century cruck frames and 16th/18th century timber-framed extensions with stone and brick wings. Internally the most unusual feature is a decorated 16th century newel stair, from which the building takes its name. Our involvement extended from initial feasibility studies, enabling works after an arson attack, proposals, (which gained Lottery funding) to the final project, now complete, converting the buildings into a local museum, serviced by a new educational building and visitors' centre on the adjacent vacant site.
