Sole survivor of the Palace of Whitehall, this building, designed by Inigo Jones in 1619, was the place where Charles I was beheaded.

The Undercroft, used for private functions, sits below the Hall with its famous Rubens ceiling and was found to be badly in need of upgrading. Kitchen, toilets, cloakrooms and offices were replanned and relocated by the Practice to maximise the usable Reception Area.

In our design a sharp distinction is drawn between old and new by visually separating historic fabric from new work in construction and colour. By inserting a raised floor in the service quarters we avoided opening the existing floor for new drainage; new ventilation and rewiring were added, the Entrance refurbished and the Shop redesigned.
