Conceived in outline by Matthew Brettingham, detailed designs for the house by James Paine were modified and completed by Robert Adam in the early 1760s for the first Baron Scarsdale.

Over a number of years the Practice carried out a major programme of maintenance and repair to house and grounds. Lead roofs and flashings were renewed and slates repaired and reinstated. Roof timbers, some infested with death-watch beetle, others with wet or dry rot, were inspected and renewed and ventilation introduced to prevent further decay. External stonework was cleaned, repaired and repointed.

Visitor facilities were upgraded and a number of Park features including the Sulphur Baths and Fishing Lodge inspected and comprehensively repaired.
