Most notable for its association with William Morris during his most active period of work, the building, with grounds running down to the Thames, dates from 1570 with additions dating from 1670.
The Practice was appointed to repair the building, whose vulnerable construction was in an advanced state of neglect, and to rationalise its twin functions as family home and showplace. Many serious structural defects were found and made good, a curator's flat provided and access routes for visitors replanned. The whole was redecorated using original Morris' designs.
The work was carried out according to the principles of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, of which William Morris was the Founder.
Client: The Society of Antiquaries of London
