Alton Barnes church re-opens following conservation work
February 17, 2017

The Saxon church of St.Mary, Alton Barnes, Wiltshire, was re-consecrated by the Bishop of Ramsbury, the Right Reverend Edward Condry, to a packed church on Sunday 5th February. The reopening followed more than six months of conservation work which included re-laying the Cotswold stone roof, repairing stonework and 17th century panelling and adding new heating and lighting. Archaeological research and dendrochronology has dated the roof structure to the 1390s and will soon reveal more about the Saxon building period. The work was made possible by a Heritage Lottery Fund grant and a grant under Viridor Credits.
