Patrick Duerden promoted to Practice Director
October 3, 2017
Donald Insall Associates is pleased to announce that Patrick Duerden has been promoted to Practice Director. Patrick leads our work at the Palace of Westminster, including our recently appointed project undertaking an update to the Palace of Westminster Conservation Management Plan, which was awarded the Europa Nostra Award in 2007. Patrick has been very fortunate to have worked at the Palace almost continuously for twelve years, and as a consequence has built up wide knowledge of the gothic revival, its buildings and their conservation needs. This work has also bought with it experience of working within tightly defined budgets, and with multiple client stakeholders.
Patrick is interested in the way that buildings communicate significance, and how architectural conservation mediates the meaning that history holds for contemporary audiences. In this respect he has an abiding interest in the gothic revival, informed by close involvement with the work of A.W.N. Pugin and his circle at the Palace of Westminster and elsewhere. Patrick’s published writing on the buildings of the fascist regime in Italy explores the dilemmas facing those with responsibility for iconic structures with complicated and often troubling histories. Patrick was formerly a trustee of the 20th Century Society.
