Chester Station Link and Carriage Shed

Chester, Cheshire

Donald Insall Associates scheduled repairs and alterations to a complex of underused buildings in the east forecourt of Chester Station, including designing a spectacular patent glazed roof in the east Carriage Shed. The buildings, opened up and now part of the public domain, give improved access to the station and connect the area to a planned series of modern office buildings. The Grade II* listed buildings were in a poor state of repair, with inappropriate modern alterations which have been undone where possible, revealing hidden historic finishes such as Victorian glazed bricks and original signage, which are now regilded. We worked as heritage consultants for MPH Construction throughout the construction phase of this design and build project. The Carriage Shed is now a popular events space, hosting a range of makers’ markets and craft beer festivals.
