Donald Insall Associates provided architectural design services for a modern addition to this Grade I listed building and Scheduled Monument. Following the restoration of the hall, the owner wished to find a sustainable new life for its coach house, which was divided from the main house by some outbuildings and a car park and storage yard. We designed an extension that gave the owners their large gathering and party space behind the retained courtyard’s outer walls, replaced poor 19th century outbuildings and joined the coach house to the hall. The glazed structure built behind the outer walls forms a striking connection with our clients’ restoration of the walled garden. Views over the Eden Valley and the Fells beyond are framed in new openings within the outer wall.
