Geufron, Mid Wales
Geufron nestles against a steep Welsh hillside with stunning views to the Berwyn Mountains. To take full advantage of the far-reaching views and maintain the scale of the existing cottage, our approach was to design a ‘new barn’ linked to the cottage by a glazed, single-storey entrance to the kitchen garden. In this way there has been minimal impact to the original plan.
The remote and inaccessible setting of Geufron presented difficulties for construction and access by heavy goods vehicles. To reduce building costs, the owners elected to implement a self-build project, with help from the local rural community.
The stone was sourced from the quarry opposite the valley. The local woodsman felled and seasoned five ash trees for the doors and floors, and provided much of the other timber for the structure. Oil consumption for heating has been minimised by installing a thermal store, heated by a wood burning stove and large solar collectors.
