Gwrych Castle, Abergele
This picturesque Grade I castle of the 1820s stands in a prominent position overlooking the coast of North Wales. It was deemed a ‘Building at Risk’ and had lain derelict for over 20 years before it was offered for sale on the open market. The new owner asked Insall to help find a sustainable future for the building. We co-ordinated the structural assessments and security of the site, before undertaking an extensive condition survey, options appraisal and feasibility studies. Our advice included recommendations for conservation repairs and their order of priority. We have gained planning permission for a scheme to convert the castle into an unusual luxury hotel, which takes full advantage of the site’s dramatic topography to sensitively weave the new additions into the historic landscape and to protect the setting.
