King’s Observatory

Donald Insall Associates designed the transformation of the Grade I Listed Sir William Chambers’ Observatory at Kew from a poorly adapted office to a four bedroom house. Works include restoration of the Georgian glazed cabinets, the rotating cupula, and the double-height reception rooms. Significant upgrading works to services were necessary to meet both contemporary comfort expectations and Building Regulation requirements. We also designed a below-ground extension to accommodate more guest suites and car parking, all set within the picturesque landscape. Working with the landscape architect Kim Wilkie, we have also designed features to articulate the surrounding landscape. Refurbishment work is currently on-going, with expected completion in summer 2017
