Palace of Westminster: Courtyards Conservation Project

The Palace of Westminster’s courtyards are integral spaces within Barry’s design, often featuring decorative carvings and stained glass to rival the architecture on the principal elevations. One of the ten courtyards includes the surviving medieval Cloister Court, originally built for St Stephen’s College during the early 16th century. Donald Insall Associates have been appointed to a five years phase project of cleaning, conserving and repairing the masonry, repair of the cast iron rainwater goods and decorative metalwork, and conservation of the coloured glass windows to seven of the courtyards. The works have been informed by a series of comprehensive trials and programmed so as to minimise disruption the building users .
