Plumpton Rocks, Harrogate

The site is a notable example of a mid 18th century pleasure ground laid out in a picturesque style. It was designed around striking natural rock formations and a lake formed from two earlier fish ponds. Views along the lake were the subject of the first two commissions undertaken in oils by J.M.W.Turner in 1798. DIA worked on repairs to the Grade II listed dam funded by Historic England and designed originally by the eminent York architect, John Carr. The project also includes de-silting the lake to recreate former creeks, which is being funded separately by Natural England. The site opened in July 2016.
