PORTICO: ‘The Wing’
PORTICO is an EU-funded partnership between the cities of Chester, Ghent, Cologne and Utrecht in co-operation with the Initiatief Domplein Foundation. Each city has a rich archaeological heritage and PORTICO’s aim is to make this more accessible to everyone through new techniques and approaches.
We were appointed as Architect to design a new “interpretation hub” on the City walls overlooking The Roodee. Our new canopy was designed to provide an improved view point for visitors and to tell the story of Chester’s history as a port. Dubbed “The Wing”, the structure is made from a new form of concrete which has an exceptionally thin cover and smooth finish. This project is the first known use of the material in the UK.
Under the canopy is a cantilevered deck with seating. Interpretation designed by Imagemakers includes lighting and the latest digital binoculars, which give an idea of how the historic Roodee looked in Roman and Medieval times. This project shows the practice, and the City of Chester, can lead the way in introducing modern materials and design whilst respecting the historic City Walls.
