Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Memorial

Donald Insall Associates with co-architect Donald Buttress were the designers of this memorial, remodelling the walls, steps and terraces designed in 1954 as a setting for William McMillan’s bronze memorial statue of King George VI, and linking Carlton Gardens with the Mall. The statue of the King has been moved closer to the processional route and set above Philip Jackson’s new bronze statue of Queen Elizabeth, who has been portrayed at a similar age to McMillan’s depiction of the King, also wearing Garter robes but with the plumed bonnet of the order. Set back on either side, Paul Day’s bronze reliefs show the Royal Family in London, during World War II and episodes from the life of Queen Elizabeth as Queen Mother.
