Roman Garden Gate

The small breach in the City Walls leading into the ‘Roman Garden’ had been supported on an ad hoc timber structure, requiring most visitors to duck and fitted with a utilitarian gate. For Cheshire West and Chester Council, we designed a replacement that improved head room, secured the structure and invited visitors through the Wall to and from the Gardens. A corten tunnel supports the wall structure and its natural iron finish blends with the red sandstone, which itself gains its colour from its iron content. A decorative garden gate completes the ensemble.
