The Winter Gardens, Blackpool
The Grade II* Winter Gardens was developed in the 1870s to provide indoor leisure and recreation facilities, but had become dilapidated and underused.
We carefully planned the fast-track first phase of works to avoid disruption to a busy events programme. The works included conservation, repair and redecoration of the Floral Hall and its cast iron roof trusses. We opened up the Rotunda dome and enhanced it with a sympathetic decorative scheme. The terrazzo floor, doors and decorative glass of the Grand Vestibule were cleaned and repaired, and the decorative plaster was re-coloured. We also created a new disabled access lift.
We uncovered fine Art Deco interiors by Andrew Mazzei, a French film-set designer, which had been obscured by later alterations. Carefully conserved, these now form a backdrop to the new Mazzei café.
The bistro was completely remodelled as The Empress Grill Rooms and now serves high quality grilled steaks and fish for 140 covers.
