The Millennium Spa Project

Bath

The practice was first involved with the Cross Bath between 1987 and 1993, when our conservation, cleaning and repair work achieved a Europa Nostra Award. In 1997, detailed investigation led to the understanding of the original oval geometry, obscured by centuries.

Both historic spas and contemporary buildings form the new spa complex in which the practice has been involved as historic buildings consultant for the five listed buildings, including the Grade I listed Cross Bath and the Grade II* listed Hot Bath.

The new Cross Bath scheme incorporated a small pool, with the natural spring being the feature where the two oval geometries overlap. The proposals for the Hot Bath stripped away unsympathetic additions, whilst the cellular nature of John Wood’s building was recreated, utilising all remaining original fabric while retaining the later inner circulation route.
