Arts Council England awards £1.7m for repairs at Tamworth Castle
The Museum Estate and Development Fund (MEND), managed by Arts Council England, has announced £25 million in funding to upgrade 29 museums across the UK, including £1.7 million for Tamworth Castle.
Dating back to the 11th century, the Grade I-listed Tamworth Castle showcases how the historic site has developed over 900 years, as well as significant items from the Anglo-Saxon Staffordshire Hoard.
As part of the government’s plan to grow local economies, ensure homes for local history, and support capital projects at museums, more than £5 million has been awarded across four museums in the Midlands, including £1.7 million at Tamworth Castle.
With this funding, urgent repairs can be made to the site, ensuring the castle can stay open to the public and provide an improved visitor experience.
“We want people across Tamworth and beyond to experience, enjoy, discover and learn from our fantastic regional museums and galleries.” said Peter Knott, Midlands Area Director at Arts Council England. “We’re pleased to be supporting Tamworth Castle to make vital building improvements to protect the castle and its collections for future generations.”
As framework architects, we have undertaken a number of projects at Tamworth Castle, and developed the scheme of repair to support this bid, and we look forward to delivering the project on site, and seeing the urgent repairs enhance this much loved historic site.
