Antur Stiniog Mountain Biking Centre

Blaneau Ffestiniog

Bu Cymdeithion Donald Insall yn gweithio ynghyd a gwirfoddolwyr Communities First i ddatblygu briff i’r fenter uchelgeisiol yma, wedi gosod o fewn chwarel Llechwedd. Mae’r ganolfan beicio a ddilynodd yn cefnogi’r traciau, gyda’r bwriad o gynnal cystadlaethau rhyngwladol yn ogystal â defnydd adloniadol. Mae’r ganolfan yn cynnwys caffi, siop, gweithdy, ystafelloedd ymolchi, cawod, teras ar y llawr uchaf a gofod i ddigwyddiadau. Mae traciau beic Newydd yn annog beicwyr i feicio rhwng yr adeilad Newydd ac i mewn i’r pentref.

Mae’r adeilad wedi’i ysbrydoli gan ei leoliad diwydiannol ac wedi’i adeiladu ar domen llechi cyfnerthedig, sy’n mwyhau’r defnydd o wastraff ar y safle drwy ddefnyddio deunyddiau, cyflenwyr, adeiladwyr a chymdeithion lleol. Y brif ystyried wrth ddylunio’r adeilad oedd lleihau’r effaith ar ei amgylchedd, ac i ddarparu defnydd creadigol Newydd I’r safle ac ehangu’r cymeriad lleol. Cafodd llechi gwastraff o’r domen gwastraff ei adennill ar gyfer cladin y waliau, tan adeiledd a’r dirwedd; hefyd, cafodd holl ddeunydd y cloddio ei ailddosbarthu i greu’r traciau beic.

Mae’r adeilad safon BREEAM Excellent wedi ysbrydoli gwellhad cymdeithasol ac economaidd i’r safle a oedd unwaith ar farw.

Donald Insall Associates worked alongside Communities First volunteers to develop a brief for this ambitious venture set within Llechwedd Quarry. The resulting Mountain Bike Centre supports the world-class mountain biking tracks and adventure centre at Blaenau Ffestiniog, with the purpose of holding international competitions as well as recreational use. The complex includes a cafe, shop, workshop, washrooms, showers, roof terrace, and events spaces. New cycle tracks now encourage bikers to cycle between the new building and into town.

The building is inspired by its industrial setting and built entirely on a consolidated slate waste tip, maximising the use of on-site waste materials through the use of local materials and local suppliers, contractors and consultants. The prime consideration for the design of the building was to minimise its impact on the surroundings, provide creative reuse of the site and enhance the local character. Slate waste from the nearby slate waste heap was reclaimed for the wall cladding, substructure and landscaping; moreover, all excavated materials are redistributed to create the cycle tracks.

This BREEAM Excellent rated building inspired social and economic improvement to this previously moribund slate capital.
