Binham Priory

Norfolk

Originally founded in 1091, Binham Priory is one of the most complete monastic ruins in Norfolk. Donald Insall Associates designed and discreetly inserted a new porch of the ruined north aisle of the building, providing WCs and parity of access for visitors with disabilities. Opportunity has been taken to reform the vaulted space of the west bay of the missing north aisle in order to form a dramatic new entrance, whilst WCs are housed in an adjacent barrel-roofed extension, which has been kept low so as to avoid obscuring sight lines through the clear glazed windows from within the church. The extension is of flint and stone in order to blend with its background, but is obviously contemporary in its design.
