Dergoed Farm

A sensitive scheme to repair and convert

Dergoed is a traditional upland farmstead located near Llangollen in North Wales. It consists of an early 18th-century farmhouse and a substantial 19th-century barn both of which are constructed into the hillside. On our first visit to the site, the buildings were in a very poor and dilapidated condition having fallen out of use. Donald Insall Associates were appointed as lead consultant to develop a sensitive scheme to repair and convert the buildings into residential use.

The designs sought to expose the historic surface finishes and architectural details from its agricultural use and maintain the internal spatial qualities from the movement from smaller cellular rooms to full height open areas. The new interventions were expressed in a contemporary, lightweight manner and shared the material palette of the existing site to allow the new and old to sit in harmony beside each other.
