Hodnet Hall
Dovecote, Shropshire
This rare 17th century dovecote, a Scheduled Monument and Grade II* listed building, has been carefully and sensitively conserved under the practice’s direction.
Donald Insall Associates was lead consultant and coordinated a team comprising a structural engineer, archaeologist, ecologist, and timber diagnostic specialist. The works involved reroofing in handmade clay plain tiles, a new glover in oak, strengthening of existing decayed oak purlins, stitching of substantial cracks in the brickwork, replacement of a heavily weathered stone cornice with a new one to match, reinstatement of the rendered decorative recesses, repointing to match the existing one using hot lime mortar, repairs to a 17th century door, and provision of a new gate to a later 19th century opening.
The project was funded by a Natural England grant.
