Private House, Kensington

London

This private house is a handsome semi-detached villa of c.1840, Grade II listed, in Kensington and Chelsea’s Norland Conservation Area. It was built as part of a planned axial development of middle-class houses by the Norland Estate, and Addison Avenue was laid out on an axis with the newly built St James’s Church just to the north.

Donald Insall Associates advised the owners and their architect on a refurbishment scheme which will make the house, which had seen very little investment in recent decades, habitable and provide for all modern requirements of the family whilst also preserving the charm and significance of the building. Planning permission and listed building consent were granted following negotiations with RBKC’s design and conservation team.
