Royal Opera House

Covent Garden, London

We were appointed by the Royal Opera House to assist in the competition stage of their proposed ‘Open-Up’ project, providing historic building advice on the likely heritage constraints of the Grade I listed building, later Dixon Jones additions and surrounding Conservation Area, and the suitability of the various schemes put forward. Stanton Williams were appointed as architects. Their proposals seek to increase the presence of the Grade I listed building within the Covent Garden piazza and to enhance the cultural offer of the Royal Opera House to a wider audience through increased public accessibility, extensions which would increase permeability through the building and its presence externally, and increased space for Learning and Participation programmes.

The proposals were widely supported by Westminster City Council and Historic England and received planning permission and listed building consent and we continue to advise on the project.
