Diversity and Continuity: Exploring London as an architectural melting pot

This panel discussion will trace the idea of global aesthetics through ornament and how this has been integrated within the architecture of London in the past and present.

There is a lexicon of architectural ornament – not unlike visual a language – that we have in common with so many cities.

Yet it is through the constant adaptation, combination and re-imagination of ornamental tropes, drawn from cultures worldwide and historical styles, that the architecture of London has become meaningful for those involved with its production as well as its reception.

Far from being everything to everyone all the time, our discussion will explore the changing meaning and status of ornament and how this been perceived by generations of Londoners over time.
