Donald Insall Associates has recently completed restoration work to Upton War Memorial, in Upton-by-Chester, which has since been Grade II listed. Originally unveiled in 1921 to commemorate the fallen from World War I, a new stone was added in 1948 to commemorate the fallen from World War II. The cross was constructed in Darley Vale stone, to the design of Chester-based architect Phillip H Lockwood. Carved from sandstone, the cross was in sound condition, however, the carved lettering panels displayed signs of lichen growth and weathering whilst the paved area showed severe cracks, open mortar joints and severe staining. The kerb walls also had generally open joints around the full perimeter of the memorial, with cracks in multiple areas.

We worked with Recclesia, a contractor we regularly collaborate with, to source replacement flagstones from Beeston, and testing multiple mortar samples to match the flecked finish of the retained stones. We avoided an ‘obvious’ restoration that would risk diminishing the monument’s aura of respect. Instead we realised a sympathetic and considered approach to restoration, whereby the memories of Upton’s history are still palpable within the confines of this memorial. Since the restoration, Upton War memorial has been recognised as of national interest, and is now listed at Grade II.

Works to the site were already garnering compliments from delighted passers-by throughout the restoration. Frances Moreton, Director, War Memorials Trust said: “War memorials are a tangible connection to our shared past creating a link between the fallen and today. It is vital we ensure all our war memorials are in the best possible condition for their age and the charity is delighted to support this project. The centenary of World War I is a wonderful opportunity for local communities across the country to protect and conserve their war memorials; if anyone knows of any other war memorials in need of help please contact us”. These positive reviews are only expected to increase as the public once again have access to their memorial.
