Furness Abbey

Furness Abbey is a Grade I Listed former Cistercian monastery situated to the north of Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria. Founded by King Stephen, it dates back to 1123 and was once one of the wealthiest and most powerful monasteries in the country, second only to Fountains Abbey in North Yorkshire. Donald Insall Associates have been involved in the repair and conservation of the abbey since 2015 and have recently been developing designs for improved visitor access throughout the site. The works comprise of the construction of timber ramps to areas of uneven ground and significant level change, a timber stair and handrail to a new asphalt platform on the Night Stair, replacing the non-compliant Visitor Centre ramp, and infilled sections of earth to address steep grass slopes.
