Repairs and Upgrading of Community Halls

Queen Elizabeth School, Godmanchester, Huntingdon

Contemporary community spaces

The expansion of Godmanchester Town identified a need to upgrade existing community facilities.  The Queen Elizabeth School dates from the mid-16th century and was a former grammar school.  Today, Godmanchester Town Council manages it for the community.

The project to conserve and upgrade the Grade II-listed community halls aimed to safeguard the historic building and provide hall users and residents of the town with welcoming, light and contemporary spaces for a wide range of activities. The brief, included understanding the development of the building and its construction; a condition survey to inform repairs; refurbishment of the hall interiors to provide larger and better facilities – WCs, catering, acoustic improvements, new services – lighting, heating and ventilation and audio visual systems and retaining an accessible external public WC.

Following the project, the Town Council continues to seek feedback from the community, to widen the hall’s reach and to increase the public enjoyment of the building.
