The Old War Office

The Old War Office is a Grade II* listed building located in the Whitehall Conservation Area; surplus to requirements, it was sold by the MOD and handed over to private owners in March 2016. We were appointed as Historic Buildings Consultants to the project team specifically to advise and guide the client and design team through negotiations with Westminster City Council and Historic England, resulting in successful applications for planning permission and listed building consent. The ambitious scheme will adaptively reuse the building as a hotel and residential accommodation. Our detailed advice and guidance included the production of a Townscape and Heritage Impact Assessment, which concluded that the scheme would present a once-in-a-generation opportunity to celebrate those very qualities of this building of particular interest, securing its conservation in the long term and enabling unrivalled public access to one of the country’s most special buildings, together with building recording and advisory services.
